There’s something deeply grounding about the massive red rock canyons of Colorado National Monument. The light dances across the sandstone walls at sunrise and sunset, creating a painter’s palette in real time. Every visit reminds me how timeless and humbling the desert landscape can be.
Maroon Bells feels like stepping into a dream—towering peaks mirrored in still alpine lakes, framed by glowing aspen trees in fall. I return here year after year, drawn by its peace, its changing colors, and the magic that never fades no matter how many times I photograph it. It’s a place that captures both heart and lens.
The San Juan Mountains are wild, rugged, and absolutely captivating. Each ridgeline tells a different story, from fiery fall foliage to snow-kissed peaks that seem to touch the sky. There’s a soul-stirring energy here that keeps pulling me back—camera in hand, heart wide open.
Photography, to me, is more than just a creative outlet—it’s how I connect with the world around me. It’s the quiet moments at sunrise, the thrill of chasing light across a mountain ridge, and the joy of freezing time in a way that tells a story. Every image is a piece of my journey, a way to share the wonder I feel when standing in nature’s presence.
Through photography, I get to invite others into that experience—whether it’s the stillness of a snowy field or the golden glow of an autumn afternoon—and hopefully spark a sense of awe, peace, or inspiration in their own lives.
At Colorful Colorado Photography, I'm honored to have my work recognized by juried exhibitions, fine art photography contests, nature organizations, and editorial publications. These awards are more than accolades—they're affirmations of my lifelong passion for capturing Colorado's rugged beauty, fleeting light, and untamed spirit. From dramatic mountain vistas to quiet wilderness moments, each recognized image tells a story of connection between land, light, and the human soul. This page showcases some of the honors I’ve received along my journey as a Colorado landscape photographer—each one a reminder of why I do what I do.

Every image featured on this site is captured with the Pentax K-1 Mark II—a full-frame, professional-grade camera that delivers stunning clarity, depth, and color. As the foundation of my fine art photography, this camera handles the extremes of the Colorado landscape with ease. Whether I’m shooting sunrise over the Rocky Mountains or chasing starlight in alpine meadows, its built-in image stabilization and low-light performance make it the perfect match for the diverse and dramatic scenery of Colorful Colorado Photography.
For most of my work, I rely on the Pentax 28–105mm lens, a flexible and reliable companion for everything from sweeping mountain vistas to detailed forest textures. When capturing wildlife or distant peaks in the Colorado Mountains, I use the 150–450mm telephoto lens, which allows me to reach across valleys and bring faraway subjects into sharp, stunning focus. These lenses are essential tools in my creative process—helping me tell the story of the land through every frame.
I also use a variety of lens filters to enhance and control the light in the field. Polarizing filters reduce glare and boost contrast in skies and foliage, while neutral density filters allow for long exposures that smooth water and clouds, creating that soft, painterly effect seen in many of my fine art landscape photography prints. These tools help transform real moments into timeless artwork.

This photo will always be one of my favorites because it captures more than just a landmark—it tells a story of grit, history, and the raw beauty of Colorado’s back country. The Crystal Mill stands like a guardian of the past, framed by golden aspens and the rush of water that reminds me how alive the wilderness is. It’s not easy to get here, but every time I do, I’m reminded why I fell in love with photography in the first place.
I’m honored that this very image was selected for the My Colorado: Architecture exhibit at Denver International Airport—proof that this timeless scene still speaks to so many.
"Breathtaking!"
"Only two words come to mind... Breath Taking. I received 2 beautiful prints of Chips that capture all the beauty and majestic mountains and landscape that I grew up around. These two prints will be a constant reminder of my home state and how much I miss her. Chips eye for capturing just the right shot is the key, they make you become one with the picture. I am honored to own not one but two of his great works!! Can't say enough.." - Tracy

"Spectacular!"
"Chip Thomas is a spectacular photographer. His photographs not only capture the beauty here in Colorado, but he captures the essence of Colorado. He studies the landscape and the sky and is able to find just the spot to photograph that allows the viewer to understand and appreciate the story Chip is telling through his lens. His photographs inspire people to seek beauty off the beaten path, and enjoy the simple pleasures of a night sky, a meadow bursting with life, or a snow capped mountain in the middle of a sleepy winter.." - Shannon
